The Susquehanna River Art Collection
The Susquehanna River Art Collection brings together two private collections collaboratively built by artist/curator Rob Evans and arts patron and collector James Snyder. Together they have amassed one of the largest collections of Susquehanna related art and objects in the world. Spanning over four centuries and boasting more than 100 works, the collection includes paintings, drawings, engravings, lithographs, etchings, books, maps ceramics and vintage printing plates and tools. Below is a sampling of selected works from the collection.
Also included here are a group of contemporary works from the Visions of the Susquehanna Art Collection owned by the Susquehanna National Heritage Area (SNHA). The core of this collection was acquired from the Visions of the Susquehanna touring exhibit Evans organized and curated in 2005, and is now on view at the Zimmerman Center for Heritage at Long Level along the Susquehanna. The goal is that eventually the Visions of the Susquehanna Collection and Susquehanna River Art Collection will be united under one roof in the new art museum being planned for the Susquehanna River Discovery Center and Heritage Park being developed by SNHA at the historic Mifflin Farm in Wrightsville, PA.
Together, all of these collections provide a rare and extraordinary portrait of this important river in American History, through a multitude of personal artistic lenses and broader arts movements, interpreted through a wide array of media and approaches. The collection establishes the Susquehanna's rightful place in American art history, as a vital and formative influence on what would become the nation's first truly American school of landscape painting.
